JOB CONNECT offers comprehensive, stream-lined career and employment preparation services to participants. It is particularly useful to individuals who need help finding and keeping jobs, or accessing further education or training.

JOB CONNECT is a provincial program delivered by YES Employment Services (Thunder Bay) which helps individuals gain the employability skills they need to access the labour market and stay employed. The program's primary focus is on serving youth, social assistance recipients, and those individuals not eligible for Employment Insurance.

This program gives individuals access to the services they need rather than providing a pre-determined "package" of services based on eligibility criteria. There is no lock-step process that individuals must follow. This approach invests the most intensive services and the most resources in those who demonstrate that they could not get a job or access training without these services.

The support for employers for this program is considerable. For employers interested in training subsidies, there is now more flexibility in both the wage subsidy and the number of training weeks negotiated. The program is designed to be responsive. Employers and clients receive on-going support from YES to ensure that placed participants receive additional skills if a need is identified. Employers not seeking training subsidies can save advertising costs by using YES Employment Services's referral service. YES can also do employers' pre-screening. Just designate the location as the drop-off spot for resumes.

JOB CONNECT has three services:

  • Information and Referral Services (IRS), which provides access to local labour market information and job search support to help people find work and training on their own. This service includes use of the Resource Area at YES Employment Services which offers a job board, computer lab, photocopier, fax machine, telephones, employment literature work and areas. Individuals accessing IRS can also sign up for a variety of monthly workshops.
  • Employment Planning and Preparation (EPP), which helps individuals get and keep jobs by providing support in assessing skills, interests and aptitudes in relation to the labour market, developing job search and job maintenance strategies, and identifying and preparing for appropriate education, training and employment opportunities.
  • Job Development/Placement Support (JDPS), which provides access to training in the real workplace related specifically to the individual's career and employment/training goals and available jobs. The primary focus here is on a training plan that builds on the preparation that is completed in EPP. This component includes an incentive for training in the workplace. In Thunder Bay, On-the-Job Training will be handled in partnership with Confederation College Employment Training office.

The goal is successful transition into employment, education or training.

Aboriginal Self-Employment Program

Yes Employment Services is offering the Aboriginal Self-Employment Program for the second year. The program is designed to promote and establish a close working relationship with young Aboriginal people who are interested in self-employment, while providing prospective employers with the opportunity to contribute to the development of these participants’ business management skills.

If you are an established entrepreneur and want to share your skills with an up and coming entrepreneur, YES employment services wants to match you up with an eager participant along with a wage subsidy to help offset the cost of mentoring.

The Aboriginal Self-Employment Program has a working partnership/alliance with the following agencies: Fort William Employment Program; Rocky Bay First Nation (Biinjitiwabik Zaaging); Anishinabek Employment & Training; Mamo-Wichi-Hetiwin Employment & Training; Métis Nation of Ontario Employment & Training; Ontario Métis Aboriginal Association Employment & Training; Thunder Bay Indian Friendship Employment Programs; and Nishnawbe Aski Development Fund.

YES Employment Services has representation on the following committees: Thunder Bay Aboriginal Interagency Council; Aboriginal Employment Resource Committee; and Urban Aboriginal Strategy

The aboriginal program was initiated in 1992; we are currently working along side with four First Nation communities; Red Rock First Nation, Rocky Bay First Nation, Pays Platt First Nation and Fort William First Nation.

To date we have an Aboriginal Self Employment Program which allows young aboriginal people to get experience in their related choice of self employment. We assist young people to the appropriate Aboriginal Self Employment services for small business.
