Introduction:

Ontario Métis Aboriginal Association (OMAA) and Canadian Métis Council (CMC) believe in supporting their membership & representing those Métis and Aboriginal people in Ontario, who lack power and opportunity to protect or advance themselves in today’s challenging society. Our main concern is with the rising unemployment rate amongst the Métis and Aboriginal community today.

In keeping with this philosophy, effective fiscal year 2000/2001 OMAA has entered into a $2.4 million Aboriginal Human Resources Development Agreement.

This Agreement will provide OMAA-METS with the capacity to deliver common employment and training programs to the Métis membership of OMAA & CMC

Program Objectives:

  • Assist OMAA / CMC members to find employment and obtain skills upgrading or pursue self-employment opportunities through a variety of support programs and services.
  • Assess the skill levels required for these opportunities and recommend a course of action
  • Bring our members together with real employment opportunities through our up-to-date database.

Employee Related Support

Employment Related Supports apply to OMAA/CHC Members entering new employment or pre-employment interventions for the purpose of enhancing their employability.

Feepayers & Enhanced Feepayers

Feepayers and Enhanced Feepayers are OMAA/CMC Members who are in receipt of Employment Insurance (EI), and who are entering into an agreement to attend job-related training that occurs during regular work hours. These individuals remain eligible for EI income benefits.

Job Creation Partnerships

Jon Creation Partnerships bring together local employers to promote long-term employment development by linking the needs of unemployed workers with local economic development. Job Creation Partnership are not “make work” projects.

Local Labour Market Partnerships

Local Labour Partnerships (LLMP) promote community partnerships to develop strategies that expand a community’s employment base, thus enhancing the potential for local economic success.

Self-Employment Assistance

The Self-Employment Assistance (SEA) program has two functions. SEA provides eligible OMAA/CMC Members with financial assistance in the form of repayable equity that satisfies the prerequisites of small to medium sized business start-up or expansion loans, as issued by most Canadian banks. SEA also provides eligible individuals with financial assistance for fixed periods of time while they are starting up a new business.

Target Wage Subsidy

Target Wage Subsidy applies to OMAA/CMC Members who are job ready, but having difficulty finding work. OMAA-METS offers a temporary subsidy to an employer to encourage them to hire the OMAA-METS participant.

Youth Internship

Youth Internships apply to OMAA/CMC Members who are recent graduates from High School, College or University and seeking employment relevant to their education. OMAA-METS offers a full subsidy to eligible employers/organizations to provide the participant with valuable work experience and new skills relevant to their career path.

Skills Enhancement

Skills Enhancement applies to OMAA/CMC Members requiring specific job-related training courses to enhance their employability.

Summer Career Placement Program

Summer Career Placement (SCP) Provides assistance to Participants through the provision of a wage subsidy to employers. The overall purpose of Summer Career Placement is to assist students in preparing for their future entry into the labor market.
SCP can be initiated by the participant, or jointly put forward by the prospective employer and the participant. Employers must complete and sign an application and provide a job description. An employer's SCP proposal is evaluated on the quality and educational relevance of the work experience offered to participants.
