Helping Each Other
As our name translates, MAMO-WICHI-HETIWIN Employment & Training, is all about helping our people. We are here for you. We have employment and training services and funding programs to assist Aboriginal people to move ahead with career opportunities.
MAMO is here to assist First Nation Communities, First Nation Youth and First Nation People, in general, with practical, comprehensive and culturally sensitive programs and services. We are about providing a future through programs designed to train and lead to employment.
Matawa Employment & Training is Easy to Access
Our staff is just a phone call away, or you can drop into one of our offices in either Timmins or Thunder Bay. We also provide First Nations community visits to work up close and personal with First Nations’ administration and Economic Development Officers.
Getting You Started
Matawa Employment & Training staff offers career, employment and individual counseling, to help you make the best choice in moving ahead with your training or employment plans. In addition, MAMO can help with job referrals and labour market information. When it comes to finding that important job, we can give you a hand with self-help services and job search strategies.
EMPLOYMENT AND TRAINING PROGRAMS
First Nations Community Initiatives
This is a broad program designed to assist First Nations’ communities by providing a holistic, integrated and common approach to the solution of career, employment and infrastructure needs of Aboriginal people. This program provides a great service for First Nations’ communities to become involved in training and employment opportunities to develop infrastructures, businesses, economies, human resources and community initiatives.
First Nations Individual Initiatives
We have a program that is designed to assist First Nations’ individuals through a combination of programs and services to improve their employment skills and facilitate their entry into the labour market. This program focuses on providing on- and off- the job training for individuals who face barriers in securing and maintaining employment, for women who have difficulty making the transition from home to work and for others who have difficulty making the transition from school to work. It may include employment counseling, job search activities, placement activities and purchase of training.
First Nations Regional Initiatives
Broader access is the key feature in this program that provides greater opportunities for First Nation people to participate in regional employment and training initiatives. This program focuses on regional employment training initiatives, which combine theoretical and practical applications in order to help you upgrade or gain relevant employment skills.
First Nation Youth Initiatives
If you are a First Nation youth aged 30 and under, this program is designed to help you gain meaningful employment/labour market skills and experience. This youth- based program provides elementary, secondary, post-secondary students and drop-outs with career development opportunities. The focus is on encouraging students to stay in school and helping those who intend to return to school or are currently out of school and need career development training and employment opportunities.
Apprenticeship Programs
Communities/Employers can also apply under our programming for Apprenticeship training to train individuals in skilled trades.
Income Support Policy
Individuals in an approved training course may be eligible for Income Support under one of three systems:
- Employment Insurance Benefits and Supplementary allowances;
- Basic Training Allowances and supplementary allowances
- Wage-based- particularly for projects geared toward on-the-job training.
As you can see, MAMO has a full selection of programs ready to help First Nations’ Individuals and Communities with effective training and employment services.
